Dunja's page

This page is dedicated to one of my best friends in the world, my German Shepherd Dog, Dunja.
Dunja was born February 12, 1995 in Germany. I got her a 5 years of age. She was born in Germany and lived there for 3 years. She was kept outside in a kennel all the time. She was then sold to a man in Springville, who also kept her outside all the time. It was in January 2000 when I got her. It was a partnership, I did the training and the co-owner did the breeding. She lived outside for all of 4 or 5 days until she learned how to climb stairs and get used to 3 cats!
Dunja took to the stairs and the cats quite well and is now a full time resident! For never being inside someones house, she has adapted quite well and is enjoying lounging around the house when she isn't working. Due to being outside and chewing anything she could find, she has worn down her teeth quite badly. She was such a bad dog outside in Germany and in Springville, this is the reason why they sold her. Since she has been with me, she hasn't chewed up a damn thing! I think all she wanted was someone to be with. When Dunja came to me in 2000, it was agreed upon that she would produce a litter once a year and I would train her to a SchH3. She was a SchH1 and KKL2 when I got her. We trained together and on May 19, 2001 we competed in a Protection Tournament and received 2nd place with a score of 93 out of 100 points. The next week was the real test. On May 26, 2001 she was awarded her SchH2 title with scores of 81 in Tracking, 75 in Obedience and 89 in Protection for a total score of 245. I was so proud I cried! On September 17, 2000 she was certified as a Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog with Therapy Dogs International, Inc. She gave birth to a litter on October 23, 2000. The sire was Cay v. Tiekerhook. On September 7, 2001 I got the scare of my life. She had a physical exam and the vet found a pea-sized lump on one of her breasts. They took a sample by needle and it was found that it was a tumor. October 2, 2001 was the surgery and of course, I was a wreck. They removed the breast and I had them spay her as well. I said my prayers and asked God not to take her from me because I hadn't had her long enough. My prayers were answered when the tumor came back benign! She has had plenty of rest and is recovering wonderfully. I can't thank those at Wrights Corners Animal Care Center enough, especially Dr. Amy Schreiner, DVM! Hopefully, we will get her SchH3 this upcoming season and she can retire after that.
